I’m embroiled in week two. Classes continue as described last week. My initial reactions have not changed. The favored courses remain so.
I didn’t make the cut to join Kantorei. I figured it would be a tough sell not due to ability but being a fourth year. Two first years filled the baritone seats, leaving me as the 17th man. I might be disappointed but I’m more thankful with the heavy class load and work. It’d be a pretty mad scramble and my family would get left behind.
Another new trick this time around is the Apple iPhone. I’ve been trying to get away from laptop use in class. Its great for papers and studying/resources, but far too easy a distraction during class. We got used to having cell phones on vicarage so we dropped the home line and picked up these “smart” phones. The contract is pretty nasty but the functionality is tremendous. I record lectures, keep track of tasks with a complicated Getting-Things-Done app, schedule, contacts, email, and of course iPod functions. I thought that having all this in the pocket would be a challenge. But in truth it has kept me focused on tasks and perspective on the week. Plus Anne can call me now.
The regimented academic schedule is still taking some getting used to. Vicarage was busy but not in the same way. Where vicarage moves towards Sunday, the academic week has no ups-and-downs but is persistent in its intensity.
Saturday I am traveling with Admissions to the Indiana District Worship conference in Indy. One more thing to keep me from the important tasks of class and family.
Well, that’s all folks. I’ll try to give some class feedback at some point. Our discussions of the Church in Dogmatics 3 have been revelatory.
(And yes, a new prescription can make a world of difference with eye strain.)
