My wife keeps accusing me of being a coffee snob. I have decided to agree with her. When in Siberia, the coffee was horrible. They have a bizarre fascination with the free-dried coffee. Its not good. I did have a pot of coffee “east style” at a hotel restaurant in Novosibirsk. It was by far the best cup in Russia I tasted, even with the grizzlies at the bottom. We shouldn’t blame them. They are in Asia after all and have great taste in tea. I drank tea frequently.
Then we went to Germany. Coffee is not new to Germany. Bach composed his “Coffee Cantata” in tribute to the new coffee shops in Leipzig. That was four hundred years ago. Even so, the coffee was largely Italian origin and style. Italian coffee is just as good or better than French coffee. Every cup, whether at hotel, restaurant or cafe was terrific. I was refreshed and rejuvenated with real coffee.
A couple days ago, my french press bit the dust. It met its fate in a unfortunate encounter of Gabriel and the floor. I had to order new glass for it. Instead I decided to cross-grade to an 8 cup from a 12 cup which is far too large for my typical 4 cup batch. World Market had an eight cup for a fair price. Also I have only eight week old beans from before Siberia. They’re not so good anymore. While at World Market, I couldn’t resist the Illy beans. I’ve avoided them for many months but after my positive experience with cups of Illy in both France and Germany I succumbed. As I sit here, I savor sipping twelve oz. of Italian stove-top espresso. Yummy.
The espresso was so good in Germany that I predict a proper Espresso Machine is in my future. This is certainly the distant future but I see it on the event horizon.
