One Lutheran…Ablog!â„¢: True Praise Songs
Praise Songs. This term completely annoys me. What is true praise? True praise is speaking rightly about God. True praise is right Confession. True praise is “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” True praise is, “My Lord and my God.” True praise is, “Truly this was the Son of God.” True praise songs ought to speak primarily about God’s works, not primarily about his attributes. Or, the two should not be separated. The Psalms always praise God for His wondrous works, which He did on behalf of His people. Separate praise from the works of God in Christ, in the Sacraments, and in the Word, and you are left with nothing. “Righteous are you, O Lord, in all your works.”
Pr. Biesel has given us an excellent post about the virtues of confessional hymnody versus the language of the “praise song.” Summary statement: why when you have a bucket of diamonds (hymnal) would you choose a cubic zirconium? (“praise” song)
